What is an end-of-life doula and how can they support you in Thanet?

doula noun– /duːlə/ – a non-medical professional who offers emotional, practical, and spiritual support to individuals and their loved ones at the end of life.

About Doulas

An end-of-life doula, also known as a death doula or soul midwife, serves as a compassionate companion. They support individuals and their families during the final stages of life. Their role is deeply personal and varies based on the needs of each person they serve. They provide emotional, spiritual, and practical support, helping to create a peaceful and meaningful end-of-life experiences, such as guided conversations about fears or wishes, and practical supports like organizing legacy projects.

Unlike medical professionals, an end-of-life doula focuses on the non-clinical aspects of dying. They help with advance care planning, facilitate conversations about death, and assist in creating a comfortable and comforting environment. Doulas often help individuals explore their fears and wishes, offering a safe space to discuss concerns that might otherwise be difficult to express.
They may also support families by offering guidance on what to expect during the dying process, helping them navigate their emotions, and providing a calming presence. Doulas often assist with legacy projects, memorial services, and grief support, ensuring that the transition is as gentle as possible for everyone involved.
In essence, an end-of-life doula honours the sacredness of this final stage of life, walking alongside individuals and their loved ones with empathy, respect, and unwavering support.

End-of-Life Doula in Thanet

About Me

Hello and welcome to my website. My name’s Jo, and I’m an End-of-Life Doula based in Thanet, Kent, supporting individuals and families in Ramsgate, Margate, and Broadstairs. After teaching in adult education for over 20 years, I reached a point in life where I felt called to make a meaningful change. As I approached the halfway mark of my life, I found myself yearning to serve others in a deeper, more personal way.

My calling became clear after reflecting on the moments I spent at the bedside of my nans, aunts, and father during their final days. Despite my sadness I realized how naturally I felt at ease in those sacred moments. My research led me to discover the role of the end-of-life doula—a role historically held by women within their communities, but sadly one that has become somewhat forgotten over time. The more I explored this path, the more I felt it resonated with who I am. It aligns with my listening ear, my non-judgmental nature, my love of alternative therapies, my ancestral roots, and my deep desire to help realign and nurture our sense of community.

My Training

I began this journey by completing the Introduction to Soul Midwifery with the beautiful soul, Felicity Warner. Here we explored what a good death might look like, the stages of dying, vigiling and practical bedside skills.  This was followed by the End-of-Life Doula Foundation course with Living Well Dying Well who work in tandem with End of Life Doula UK. Over the next few years, I’ll be furthering my skills by completing the Diploma with Living Well Dying Well, along with other courses that will deepen my knowledge and skills as a doula. Currently, I’m volunteering in a ward support role at Margate Pilgrims Hospice, where it is both a joy and a privilege to accompany the dying in their final steps.
